How to import QFX Web Connect files as QIF files into Quicken 2013 or earlier

Modified on Wed, Jun 30, 2021 at 4:26 PM

This tutorial shows how to import QFX (Web Connect files)  into Quicken, which is already three years old. We will use the QFX2QIF utility. IMPORTANT: QFX2QIF is now replaced with the Transactions app, which converts from more formats and converts to more formats.

We will use, as a file example, Quicken 2013, as of May 2016. This Quicken is already modern 3 years old. And as of April 2016, it's stopped importing Web Connect files.

Just to verify, we're gonna try to import the Web Connect file. Click 'File' - 'File Import' - 'Web Connect File' and open a QFX file.

And we get a message, that Quicken cannot import this file.

Another option for Quicken is to use to import QIF files. Quicken says, that it cannot import QIF files for certain account types. It can only import the QIF files for the Cash account. But with certain technics we can import QIF file, correctly prepared into account, we want to use. In our case, it's gonna be Checking Account. So, what we need to do? We need to use the QFX2QIF utility from ProperSoft. You can go to https://www.propersoft.net/products/qfx2qif and it will take you right to the product page QFX2QIF Converter. You can download it for PC or Mac and install it on your computer. What we need from Quicken to the successful conversion - is the Account Name you want to import into. The trick is that the QIF file must have the Account Name from Quicken, so Quicken can figure out to which Account import that QIF file.

So, what we need to do - is to grab that Account Name: you need to type it or you can copy it. In our case, we go to 'Tools' - 'Account List'.

Click 'Edit'.

And select Account Name, then right-click - 'Copy' and close the window.

Now start the QFX2QIF utility and open a QFX file.

Review transactions: Date side, Payee name is right, Amount is correct, Memo, Check#. Currency is not important, but it still is shown, the QIF file doesn't carry to Currency.

It's important when we copy the Account Name to the clipboard and once you load the QFX file - click to 'Account Mapping' Tab, you'll see that Source Account is 'CHECKING: Bank'. Paste that Name, in this example, 'Royal Bank Checking'. So the utility will use this name for the QIF file.

Another important moment is to select the QIF Target, as Quicken 2014 or earlier. There are different options, that create quite importantly different QIF files. There are options, such as Quicken 2015-16 for PC (there are different tutorials for Quicken versions at ProperSoft channel), we will use Quicken 2014 or earlier. Unless what you need is to uncheck some transactions or do other things. Usually, you just have to enter the Account Name and click the 'Convert' button.

Click the 'Convert' and save a QIF file (the file name is offering the same as the name of the QFX Web Connect file).

Then click 'Save' and 'Yes'.

Go back to Quicken and click 'File' - 'File Import' - 'QIF File'.

Browse for that file and click 'OK'.

Another important moment is to select 'All Accounts'. It's mean that Quicken will read your QIF File and when it finds the Account Name on that QIF file, it will locate the Account and import transactions there. You can ignore the message "Don't see your account?"('QIF import is not available for checking, savings, credit cards,401(K) and all other brokerage'). Click the 'Import' button.

QIF file is successfully imported. Let's check imported transactions.

They are under the 'Royal Bank Chequing Account'. You can review them, delete some of them, or you can just click 'Accept All'.

We see all transactions are imported into Quicken 2013 into Checking Account, true correctly prepared QIF file, using ProperSoft utility QFX2QIF.
